Tryst

Tryst (work in progress)

Natural development proceeds slowly. Some small sculptures of heads were made directly from drawings that related to the 'psalm' project, a project dating back to 2011. The idea presented there is occurring in this current painting, Tryst. Finding a workable abstraction for a head or face is an enduring problem as so much rests there in our recognition of emotion and mood, this 'idea' then is the late flowering of my continuing thought on the matter. Colour for this piece must follow in some form or other but as yet is undecided.

The Blue Guitar

This is a beginning (of a picture)
It's the underneath
I work in an unfettered way
unlaboured thought

I resolve not to reinvent the wheel every time
I will paint my old motifs
motifs I have enjoyed over the years
that I can now refine

No longer do I care what other people think
my age brings freedom
an escape from expectancy
a luxury in work

This is a journey with 'the blue guitar'
I know the tune it will play
we will play it together in the studio
just me and my paints

Piero di Cosimo

Piero di Cosimo

A recent visit to The National Gallery re-introduced me to a battle scene by Piero di Cosimo from which I made a drawing, well seven drawings really.
This is a small watercolour developed from those drawings.
how strong is soft
how powerful is weak
like the humility of Braque
stands out

This tragic pyramidal form collapses within itself
while love suspends time
and hold the moment still

How would it translate into oil
should it be large or small

the answers are in the doing
